ABOUT THE AAC PUBLIC TENANTS GROUP

OUR STORY

14 years ago a group of about 5 interested tenants with the support of then Neighbourhood Renewal (NR) Team, Power Neighbourhood House and Eastern Tenancy Housing Advocacy started the AAC Public Tenants Group.

Over the years the membership of tenants has grown and we have become a vibrant group advocating for the collective good of public housing tenants and our community. We have around 50 members and a great Committee and we have done a lot of really important and good work. We have assisted many people that have been facing issues such as impending homelessness, housing issues, maintenance issues, problems with neighbourhood disputes etc...

We have built a fantastic relationship with Office of Housing and are very grateful to DHHS Housing Managers and their team for attending our meetings, forums and for the constant assistance, sharing of knowledge and for listening to tenant needs.

Our 10 year celebration that was held on the 19 March 2015 turned out to be a very successful event. There were so many people coming along that had been part of the group’s initial set-up and have provided various supports over the years. The DHHS Senior Management who were invited, all took time out of their important roles and came along to congratulate us and to join our celebration. This was very inspiring. Senior representatives from Monash Council, from the local PM’s office, from Link Health and Community Services and other service providers as well as many tenants came along. It was a great day and it shows how highly regarded our little group is within the community. What a proud day for our group. It was a really lovely day and gave us a chance to thank all of the individuals and organisations who have come along on our journey and have all played an important part towards enabling us to be such a strong Public Tenants Group and do some real and valuable work to make the lives of local tenants and the community better.

Our aim is to keep growing and becoming a stronger group in order to make our area a better place to live and the lives of our local public tenants and the rest of the community more positive. We really hope that other locals will come and join us. You are all welcome.
